Unfortunately, selecting is hard. You select for certain things and then the actual job or position is another thing.

Typically two things can happen : either

A. Test and testing becomes heavily gamed by gatekeepers who have a vested interest in keeping the test like that, and the test drifts away from reality, or ;

B. Test disappears and is replaced by gradual commitment (i.e for example working 1 day together or whatnot).

SIgns of A. are plenty in declining economies (chicken or egg ? declining because of plutocracy, or predictor ?) while B. is on the rise in ascending ones.
